From DALL·E Prompts to Codex Specs: Design That Survives Handoff

I used to hand designers a DALL·E prompt and hope the vibe survived Slack. Now I hand engineers a Codex-shaped spec and hope the design survives implementation. OpenMontage turning Claude into a video studio, Ideogram's in-image text, local Voicebox clones, Meetily for bot-free meeting notes — the stack got richer. Handoff discipline had to get stricter or the richness just created prettier chaos.

From prompt to spec

A prompt is a wish. A spec is a contract: dimensions, typography rules, forbidden claims, accessibility notes, export formats, and what "done" means in one sentence. Codex can install tools from a GitHub link and scaffold the checklist; it cannot invent the taste constraints I refuse to leave implicit.

I write the spec before any image model runs. Models are cheaper than arguments with a developer on Thursday.

OpenMontage and agentic video

OpenMontage — free, huge star velocity in the notes — researches, scripts, finds footage, edits with voiceover, music, captions. Setup by cloning with Claude Code. Powerful, and easy to ship a film that quietly used uncleared storm footage or music.

My handoff pack includes rights status per asset. Agentic editors get a library of pre-cleared media first. The open web is for research, not for silent commercial use.

Ideogram, Voicebox, Meetily as local-friendly pieces

Ideogram 4.0 for in-image text, Voicebox for local voice cloning in seconds across many languages, Meetily for local meeting transcription without a meeting bot joining the call — these reduce cloud dependency for sensitive work. Nvidia Nemotron inside Codex via Ollama building an EMI calculator was the "local brain" proof in the notes.

Local is not automatically safe. Disk encryption, access control, and not leaving clones of a client's voice on a shared laptop still matter.

Week-nine free tools as a shopping list with manners

Qwen Image, MiniMax video, TubeTutor notes, ScreenCap learning workflows into automations, music tools, deepfake-call detection — I triage by residency need and handoff need. ScreenCap-style workflow learners only run on dummy accounts until I see what commands they emit.

Deepfake detection belongs in the security lane, not as a toy. If my agents can clone voices, my ops need detectors and verification rituals.

DALL·E-to-ads history without nostalgia

Older notes about ChatGPT for text, DALL·E and Midjourney for images, AI models in ads that look more human — useful history. The failure mode has not changed: unverifiable claims and faces without consent. Specs catch both if I bother to write the forbidden list.

Growth-hacking D2C with generative AI is fine when the landing page still tells the truth. Handoff includes the claim sheet legal already saw.

Codex install-from-link caution

Paste a GitHub URL into Codex and say install — wonderful for speed, terrifying for supply chain. I pin commits, read the README, and run installs inside a container when the tool is new to me. Stars are not a signature.

OpenMontage earned a review. Unknown repos with "one-click agent studio" in the title earn a sandbox or a no.

Handoff packet I reuse

Spec PDF, brand tokens, cleared asset library, model ids, prompt files, export checklist, rights appendix. Designer, editor, and engineer get the same packet. Slack vibes are optional commentary, not the source of truth.

When someone asks for "just the prompts," I send the packet anyway. Prompts without constraints are how redesigns thrash.

Closing

Wish in a prompt if you must. Ship with a spec. Let Codex accelerate the boring glue. Let humans own taste, rights, and claims. That is how design survives handoff instead of dying in a beautiful folder named final_v7.

Packet over prompts

When a partner asks for "just the Midjourney prompts," I send the full handoff packet anyway — spec, tokens, rights appendix. OpenMontage and Ideogram outputs without the packet are how pretty chaos returns. Codex can zip the packet; humans still insist on it.

Commit pin on installs

Codex install-from-GitHub must pin a commit SHA in the PR. OpenMontage earned stars; unknown repos earn pins or a no. Supply chain is part of design handoff now whether designers like the phrase or not.

Voice clone consent log

Voicebox local clones require a consent log line before the file is created — even for my own voice used in demos. Meetily notes never train a clone by accident. Design handoff includes audio rights now, not later.
