Claude Code Alone: What Changes When I Drop the Other Agents

Claude Code alone — no Cursor, no Bolt, no second desktop agent — changed my week more than another tool launch. Karpathy's line about English becoming the new programming language, and his shift from writing most of his code to writing a minority while models handle the rest, only lands if the harness is strong. Solo Claude Code forced me to invest in skills, tests, and AGENTS.md instead of hiding weakness behind a pile of overlapping agents.

What disappears when the other agents leave

No more blaming Cursor for what Claude missed or Bolt for what the repo needed. One harness means one place to improve. Failure becomes informative instead of a diplomatic incident between tools.

I still keep other tools for bakeoffs. Daily driver exclusivity is how I learn the real failure modes.

Karpathy's thirty-minute camera system

One plain-English prompt building servers, models, dashboard, debugging, deploy for a home-camera analysis system in about thirty minutes is a north star for harness quality, not a promise I make to clients with compliance needs. The portable lesson: clear goal, iterative debug rights, and a willingness to let the agent run.

My solo setup copies the clarity, then adds tests and secret rules Karpathy's personal lab may not need.

From eighty percent to twenty percent

Writing less of the code myself only works if I write more of the specifications, evals, and reviews. The twenty percent I keep is the part that hurts when wrong: threat model, data contracts, product taste, final approval.

People who outsource the twenty percent are not leveraging AI. They are abandoning the wheel.

Skills as the replacement for tool sprawl

Instead of adding Windsurf for one job and Codex for another, I encode the job as a Claude Code skill. Sprawl moves into versioned files I can diff. That is healthier than five UIs with five memories of "how we do auth."

Monthly I delete skills I did not invoke. Dead skills are lies that wait for a busy day.

Loneliness benefits

Solo harness work is quieter. Quiet is good for reading plans before execute. Multi-agent theatre can feel productive while nobody reads. Claude Code alone made me read again.

I schedule a two-hour solo block daily. Interruptions go to a queue the agent may not clear without me.

When I allow a second agent back

Specialised computer-use on a different vendor, or a creative renderer, after Claude Code's path is green. Second agents enter as tools with scopes, not as co-equal chaotic partners.

Co-equal chaos was the old habit. Scoped tools are the new one.

What I sell

Claude Code harness audits, skill packs, and "two-week solo driver" coaching for teams drowning in overlapping agents. Subtraction is a deliverable.

Line under the monitor

English is a programming language only if tests are a runtime. Claude Code alone. Skills in git. Humans on the twenty percent that still hurts.

Subtraction retro

Monthly I list agents and IDEs I did not open. If Claude Code alone covered the work, I delete the unused seats' API keys from the project. Karpathy-style leverage includes subtracting tools that only feed anxiety.

Two-hour solo block

Calendar holds for Claude Code alone. Slack status says agents are working — humans should queue. Karpathy leverage needs quiet. Without the block, English-as-programming-language becomes English-as-interruption-stream.

Twenty percent list

Written list of what I still own: threat model, data contracts, product taste, final approve. Claude Code alone may expand the eighty percent. It may not erase the list. English-as-language does not mean English-as-abdication.

Delete unused keys

After a solo-driver month, unused IDE and agent API keys get deleted from the project vault, not just mentally retired. Claude Code alone means alone. Subtraction that leaves keys behind is cosplay.

Bakeoff shelf, daily driver desk

Other agents stay on a shelf for scheduled bakeoffs. The desk runs Claude Code alone. Mixing shelf and desk daily recreates the sprawl Karpathy-style leverage was meant to escape. Skills in git replace overlapping UIs.

Quiet metric

I track hours of uninterrupted Claude Code time weekly. If the number falls, I subtract meetings before I add tools. Alone only works when the calendar agrees.
