AlphaGenome, Cerebras, and ChatGPT Images: Speed Where It Matters

AlphaGenome predicting DNA-variant effects, Cerebras-class speed stories, and ChatGPT Images in the same scroll taught me to separate 'speed where it matters' from 'speed as a personality.' Claude Cowork running third-party models, GPT-5.5, Grok watching full videos, Vercel breach notes about exposed credentials in AI apps — the week was a mix of science awe and basic security humility.

Science speed is not marketing speed

DeepMind AlphaGenome and stories of someone decoding DNA at home for roughly ninety thousand rupees are signals about specialised models and personal genomics curiosity. I do not turn them into health advice. I do steal the idea that some predictions need calibrated uncertainty, not a confident UI skin.

When clients ask for "AlphaGenome energy" on a CRUD roadmap, I translate: invest in evals and domain experts, not in borrowing a Nobel adjacent logo.

Cowork with swappable engines

Claude Cowork running external or third-party models — cheaper, specialised, or local for privacy — while keeping Claude's tools is the right architecture instinct. I want the interface sticky and the engine replaceable. Lock-in at the engine layer is how bills and policies trap you.

Mobile Cowork that takes text tasks and returns finished work gets read-only defaults until the logs are dull.

Images and creative speed

ChatGPT Images, Seedream layer separation and multilingual infographics, battles against GPT Image across prompts — I keep an arena table. Speed matters for ads iteration. Accuracy of text in image matters more than bragging about latency when the brand name is misspelled in a hero frame.

Cerebras-shaped speed is for batch jobs that are already correct in staging. It is not a reason to skip review on customer-facing visuals.

Breach lessons beside the wow

Vercel breach linked to an AI app with exposed credentials is the humility slide. Agents with inbox and dashboard access are a new attack surface. Chronicle-style screenshot memory for Codex, DESIGN.md open-sourcing, SpaceX/Cursor rumours — interesting, but none of them excuse .env files in client browsers.

I add credential scanning to every agent repo template. Wow features wait. Scanning does not.

Geopolitics as dependency risk

China restricting exports of free models while the US restricts its own, Grok rebrands, Anthropic research about models lying — I track these as supply-chain and evaluation issues. Mutual walling-off means my clients need portable harnesses and clear data residency choices.

Sarvam MCP, Hermes Agent Cloud, free AI Studio URLs, OpenScience alternatives — local ecosystem options enter the comparison when residency matters.

Where I actually spend on speed

CI for agents. Image iteration for ads. Batch document classification. Not on making the approval modal faster. Approval modal friction stays. Latency wins belong upstream of human gates.

If a vendor sells speed by removing the gate, that is not speed. That is risk with a stopwatch.

Personal genomics boundary

I will not run medical interpretation agents for clients. I will discuss software patterns inspired by scientific tooling. The boundary is explicit in SOWs so nobody "just asks a quick health question" of a coding agent with web browse.

Speed card

Swap engines. Keep tools. Scan credentials. Arena images. Respect science domains. Friction on approvals. That is speed where it matters.

Credential scan in templates

Every new agent repo from my template fails CI if it finds .env committed or AWS keys in prompts. AlphaGenome awe can wait. Cerebras speed can wait. Scanning cannot. Vercel-shaped lessons stay in the default Makefile.

Horizon vs sprint board

AlphaGenome and ASI-adjacent headlines go on a horizon doc. Sprint boards only get tasks with owners and tests. Cerebras speed stories that try to jump the fence get moved back. Speed where it matters includes knowing which board you are on.

Image text verification

Any Seedream or ChatGPT Image output with brand names gets a character-by-character check. Cerebras-class batch speed is irrelevant if the hero misspells the company. Approval friction stays on purpose.

Engine swap drill

Quarterly I point Cowork at a different engine — local or cheaper — on a throwaway project to prove the interface is sticky. AlphaGenome headlines can dazzle; portable tools keep the lights on when residency rules change.
